The Mark Brinkman Distinguished Service Award

Recognizing those who serve with heart, humility, and honor

Every day, brave men and women put on the uniform to face challenges most people will never see. Peace officers serve as both the first and last line of defense, standing as society’s critical point of resolution. WACOPS is proud to honor this commitment through the Mark Brinkman Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes officers whose dedication, professionalism, and courage bring distinction to themselves, their department, and the law enforcement profession.

The Distinguished Service Award honors Officer Mark Brinkman, who devoted 35 years to law enforcement before his passing in 2021. Mark served with the City of Langley, the Island County Sheriff’s Office, and spent his final 25 years with the Lynnwood Police Department. He is remembered for his integrity, humility, and compassion; qualities that shaped both his service and his life. This award carries forward his legacy by recognizing officers who embody that same enduring commitment to their colleagues, their community, and the profession.

Nomination Requirements

This award recognizes a WACOPS member whose service and character reflect the enduring spirit of Officer Brinkman, demonstrating excellence in duty as well as the personal integrity, humility, and compassion that elevate the profession as a whole.

Nominations may highlight professional accomplishments, personal character, or a combination of both, as long as they exemplify service above and beyond the normal expectations of the profession.

“Above and beyond the normal expectations of the profession” describes conduct that surpasses what is ordinarily expected of a peace officer. It may be reflected in a single act of heroism, or in the steady, consistent demonstration of character that uplifts colleagues, strengthens community trust, and improves the well-being of those served. It is the kind of service that reflects not just what officers do, but who they are, and how their actions positively influence others while upholding the highest ideals of the profession.

Eligibility and Criteria

  • Nominee must be a current WACOPS member in good standing.
  • Nominee should demonstrate one or more of the following:
    • Exemplary dedication to colleagues, mentorship, or community service;
    • Sustained professionalism, integrity, and humility that bring credit to their department and consistently inspire trust and respect;
    • Acts of exceptional bravery or heroism
  • Single exemplary acts and lifetime contributions will be considered.
